Wednesday Halaqa – November 14 – Suratul Hujuraat

Tafsir Suratul Hujuraat: Ayat 8 -10

8. A Grace and Favour from Allah; and Allah is full of Knowledge and Wisdom.

• It is a favor from Allah that we have faith and guidance

9.If two parties among the Believers fall into a quarrel, make ye peace between them: but if one of them transgresses beyond bounds against the other, then fight ye (all) against the one that transgresses until it complies with the command of Allah; but if it complies, then make peace between them with justice, and be fair: for Allah loves those who are fair (and just).  

•  What is the reason for this ayat to be revealed?
  • Sometimes believers fought, not with weapons, but just civil fighting, (with tree branches, slippers)
  • Rasulullah(saw) went to visit Abdullah Ibn Ubayd, and there was a clash
• Somtimes books are written about sahaba, and they are made to look ideal, but they are humans , and we hsould realize this and that is one reason why this ayat is revealed, these are realistic issues, people do disagree somtimes, and there might be fights, so it needs to be resolved, and Allah knows His creation.
• A way to realize this. The two parties who are fighting should be confronted by a third party, both should be educated about what is right and wrong, and the wrong party will have to give the right party their rights.  If the wrong party transgresses still, the third party has to take side with the good party and fight for the right cause.  The physical intervention can only be taken by the executive party who is in charge of the Islamic government
• Adl and Qist – Justice and Fairness – When Allah mentions two things seperately, there is an reason for it.
• Is it a must to fight the transgressing party?
  • For the leader – it is a Must  to fight the transgressing party
    •  ex: During Ali
  • Other Ulema said no, not must, but recommended, it is left to the Leader to decide. Maybe the time is not right according to the Imams reasoning.
• Adab with Sahaba (ra) – they are at higher levels than us, because they were around Rasulullah(saw) , yes they are human , but they are overall much better than us, they were trustworthy.  We should not in any way disrespect them.
• How much should we obey this Government?
  • We made a choice to obey this government – and Muslims are asked to fulfill their obligations
  • They allow us to practice our deen, so we must obey them, as long as the obedience of the Government doesn’t make me disobey Allah.

10.The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.

•  Khawarij – when Ali (ra) was being confronted by Khawarij – Some approached Ali (ra) to ask what he thought about them, he said, they are staying away from disbelief, they are our brothers who stood up against us.  Look at this leadership.
