Speech Title: The Prophetic Model
In the Name of God , the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger Mohammad.
The Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) had the ability to overlook somones actions.
Question arises: Can character change or not? Imam Gazali stated that if you look at falcons, you can train them, and dogs too, and you can also tame a wild horse to be gentle and ride-able.
So yes we have the ability to change our character.
See how the companions became the way they did.
Aql (Intellect) – 2 types
- Aql of a Believer – Inward aspect – allows him/her to distinguish bad from good
- Aql of a NonMuslim – reason, conclusions.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, had the strongest intellect. The next thing mentioned in the notes are about the nafs, since that is the thing within us which needs to be changed.
Story of Yusuf – After comming out of the prison, he said I dont say my self is free from guilt.
Nafs Lawama – Suratul Qiyama – Allah swears by it.
Nafs Mutmaina – Suratul Fajr – “Oh traquil soul “Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!”
- A tranquil soul is beloved by Allah.
- “Rabiki” used in this verse 28 in Suratul fajr – This form indicates intimacy that this soul has with its Lord.
Qalb (the heart) – Narrated An-Nu’man bin Bashir:Prophet peace be upon him said: “…Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.” – Volume 1, Book 2, Number 49
Ruh – Soul – “And they ask you about the soul,” – Quran – when the Jewish came to Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and asked him about what the soul is. Only Allah knows what the soul is, and we were never told exactly what it is, except that it exists.
Imam Gazali – ” The final stage of a scholar is the realization that he has no knowledge”
“And thus we have made you a middle way nation” – Quran
People of Noah – Noah will ask the Ummah (nation) of Mohammad to witness that his(Noahs) people rejected him. This shows the height of the Ummah of Mohammad.
Do not be excessive: Story of Three men who came to the Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him. One said he will never marry in his life, the other said that he will fast and never break his fast, the other said that he will pray all night and never sleep. The prophet peace be upon him said that he does all of these and still is the best of worshippers (These are not exact wordings of the text, im sorry).
- This shows that we should not be excessive even in our worship.
- The Prophet, peace be upon him, loved the actions which are small yet continuous.
Generosity has a middle ground
- Israaf – Giving out and not caring where the wealth/provision is going.
- Miserliness – Not giving at all
We have to strike a balance.
Walekum as salaam warahmatullah.
