Speech Title: Spiritual and Ethical lessons from the life of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him)

Listen to it online here:

Speaker: Professor. Tariq Ramadan

In the Name of God , the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger Mohammad.

How should we live in the west? Be a Question to others. Be a question which will provoke others to question about themselves. The answer they will get will be within themselves, because essentially the answer is between each individual and Allah.

Be consistant. Be just.

Learn from Your Past:

Suratul Duha – “Did He not find thee an orphan and give thee shelter (and care)? And He found thee wandering, and He gave thee guidance. And He found thee in need, and made thee independent.”Quran : [93:6-8]

We should learn here to always look where we came from, and learn from the past. Because each individuals past is their own school. See how you have improved (or, God forbid, gotten worse) , see how your awareness of Allah has changed, see many things!

Look at your life, see how your relationship is with the poor.

Look at nature. Before the revelations to Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him, he used to go retreat into a cave. He (pbuh) was educated by Allah through nature.

A lesson from Prophet’s (pbuh) youth : When he (pbuh) was heading towards a wedding, where there was dancing and bad stuff happening, Allah made him (pbuh) fall asleep on the way here. We can learn from this how to interact with children. Be very easy with them at first, dont “Haraam!” them. Direct them towards the better things.

According to Imam Shu’uty: 4th verse revealed was the begining of Surat Al Qalam: Noon

  • One reflection of these letters is to show that these are just letters, dont worship them. Dont worship Knowledge. Worship Allah.

Rabb – tarbiya – The educator

Walekum as salaam warahmatullah.
