Tazkiyah Retreat June 2007

Day 2 – Tuesday – Lake Lodge

Sheikh Mokhtar mentioned a hadith the night before about focusing in salaah: Allah would say to the person in salaah who turns away (with their heart) ‘Where to, to somthing better than Me?”. May Allah increase us in khushoo in salaah ameen.

6/12/07

Concept of the heart and nafs is explained.

  • Hadith – “Verily the hearing, sight, and heart, the human shall be asked about”
  • Quran – ” “
  • Diseases of the heart which affect us and are sin’s :
  • ‘Herse’: Attachment to that which is worldly
  • ‘Hasad’: violent envy
  • ‘Guroor’: Assessing ourselves more than what we are
  • ‘Ujub’: Conceitedness , seeing ourselves the way we are and elated about it.
  • ‘Riya’: To love to be seen doing good, showing off
  • Suratul Kahf: “it is a reminder for those who have a heart.” – a heart which hasnt taken a different identity
  • This physical heart is a project of our spiritual heart
  • A student once asked Imam Abdul Qadir Al Jilani – “Ya shaykh, teach us about the moods of the hearts”, Imam Al Jilani replied: “Why do you want to know about the heart when you are a full nafs”. We need to learn about this thing called nafs before we speak of the heart, because the nafs is the source of sin.
  • The Qalb (heart) is the greatest gift Allah gave us. It lets us connect to Allah directly if pure.
  • Quran-“Verily it isn’t the eyesight that go blind, but the hearts that go blind”
  • To Some, Allah resides in their hearts.
  • Hadith – “Verily Allah has on earth vessels, the vessel of your Lord are the hearts of His rightous ibaad”
  • Abdullah ibn Abbas – “Mohammad (saw) had sight of his Lord with his heart twice.”
  • The Heart is like a mirror. Knowledge enters it and reflects out as pure (or as impure) as the heart is. If the mirror is stained, the things known to that person are reflected with stains and improper to their true state (haqeeqa)
  • The reality: A chair is not just made up of wood, its real reality is that it is made up of small particles of protons and neutrons, so it is with the reality of the human being’s, we are more than just flesh. Our heart is a projection of the spiritual heart which is unseen in this dimension.
  • Hadith – “… There is a piece of flesh in the body; if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good, but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt, and that is the heart (Qalb)” (Sahih Bukhari 1:2:49).
  • Sh. Mokhtar shared with us what a Doctor told him in California: Its reported in a journal of medicine that a child had a heart transplant, when she gained conciousness, she said : “Where is Peter?”, The parents had no knowledge of any of her friends being named Peter. They looked into the history of the girl who gave the heart for the transplant and found out that Peter was the friend of that girl. SubhanAllah, there is connection. Absence of evidence is not proof.
  • The heart is a way to experience the Divine, need we more reasons?
  • Guard your heart, Sheikh Mokhtar mentioned an observation he had at the lake: He was sitting on the rocks and looked to his side, there was water surrounded by rocks and it was still, then he looked to his other side and saw the water that wasn’t guarded by rocks to be turbulent.
  • –Break–
  • ‘Wajd’ – To find somthing inside of you
    • One awliyah said that if a person finds Wajd in listening to Quran and dhikr and not in other sounds in nature, then the person might be deluded.
  • Exposing the Qalb (heart) to Dhunoob (sins) hurts the heart. Every sin has a consequence, and He pardons whom He pleases.
  • ‘Dhanab’ from same root as Dhunoob-means: tail of a dog, becomming further away from Allah, the more I am away from the source of Peace, the less peace I feel inside, and the more fear.
  • If I commit sin’s , it shows my deficiency of Touhid, because I am attatching my heart to more than One. Its the root cause.
  • The Ulema have said: “Whosoever fears Allah, Allah does not make him afraid of everything else.”
  • Verily Allah delays punishment, but never forgets.
  • Quran- “Nay it is what they have earned that stains their Qalb”
    • Each sin makes a black dot on my Qalb, It covers the heart from correct perception of reality and of Allah.
    • Touhid =Light . The Qalb sees in the Light of Touhid.
      • Sh. Mokhtar then gave an ex: that you can see inside a person with only X-ray Light, SubhanAllah!
    • This light is intensified by the obedience of Allah
    • The reason why we forget things is because of Sins
      • Imam Malik said to his student Imam Shafi’ – “I see that Allah has injected noor (light) in you, dont extinguish it by the darkness of Sin.”
      • Imam Shafi’ complained to another one of his teachers: I complained to my teacher about my lack of memory, he directed me to keep away from Sin, the knowledge of Allah is light and that light doesn’t enter the heart of a sinner.
        • I think he also said that earlier that day he accidently glimpsed at the foot of a women, and that might have been the cause. Please check on that.
    • Sins cause humiliation and lowliness inside

-Break

  • A Consequence of Sins -> Weakens My reverence for Allah inside of me. – Lack of Adab with Him and His commands
    • Its like if I show no thankfulness to m parents and talk about them in an impolite manner, I will end up loosing respect and reverance for them.
    • The More we do externally, the more deeply rooted it will become inside. Sinning is disrespecting Allah, and reverence is gone.
    • The Sin of the heart is more worse than an external sin
  • “Wahshah” – Opposite of Uns.
    • “Uns” – State in which one is in comfort with Allah, elation – reached through sincere dhikr of Allah
      • Same root as ‘Insaan’ which means human
      • So As if Im saying, If I dont have Uns, I’m not Insaan.
    • “Wahshah” – Means to have a painful feeling of lonliness inside
      • Same root as “Wahsh” – which means wild beast.
  • One salihoon said – ” Truly what the hearts find of grief and sorrow is because of what they have not found of Vision (Uns).”
    • For a sick person doesn’t know that he is sick.
  • In Haqeeqa we are nothing – If we are attatched to nothingness (this world) , we will feel constricted. If attatched to the Divine, Allah, we are Free. In order to get infinite, we have to leave finite.
  • Poet- ” Before my heart (fuad) was empty of Your love, it chose to be in Dhikr of the Creation, and when Your love called my heart, my heart responded and now I can’t imagine my heart leaving the courtyard of You”
  • Why Study the Nafs? The Origin of Sin’s is the nafs.
    • “The one who has true vision of himself, shall have true vision of Allah” Then will realize our Faqr (need) for Allah.
    • The Nafs is the lens before the Qalb.
    • Happiness is the aim. True Happiness is with the Source of Everything, Allah. Freedom doesn’t have a value in itself.
    • – Reminder – We have to practice what we learn. Strengthen our spiritual Muscles. Not just for accumulating Knowledge.
    • Explanation of Happiness:
      • The acquisition of pleasure and delight is according to each objects nature.
        • ex: The eyes happiness is different in each persons perception. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’.
        • So happiness is relative to the object which needs to be happy
      • The nature of the heart is two fold:
        • ‘Idraak’ – perception – to perceive knowables the way they are
        • ‘Irada’ – movement/will – to feel inclination towards somthing
    • Definition of Nafs: Four types of Nafs: Baheeme (Cattle-like) & Predator-like & Shaytanee (Devilish) & Malaiki (Angelic)
      • Baheeme – Enjoying eating alot, drinking alot, copulating, playing, sleeping
        • Quran- “Those who reject faith eat and enjoy themselves like cattle”
      • Predator-like: Does not give up his rights, no mercy.
      • Shaytanee – Deceives, arrogant, vanity, delusion, divides humans
      • Malaiki – Angel like – being close with Allah
  • We want to Cultivate the Angelic Nafs and rid ourselves from the Cattle-like nafs

All praise is due to Allah, Peace and Prayers be upon Prophet Mohammad.
